Who is King Ramses II?

King Ramses II, also known as Ramesses the Great and the “Matt of Ra is Powerful, Chosen of Ra,” was one of the greatest pharaohs to rule Egypt. One of his most well-known names is Ozymandias, which is Greek for the first part of his name. He was the third ruler of the 19th dynasty (1292-1186 BCE) when he was born in 1303 BC to his mother Queen Tuya and father Pharaoh Seti I. When he was just 14 years old, he served as second in command during his father’s military expeditions in Palestine, Libya, and Nubia. When he was 22 years old, he was conducting his own campaigns alongside his sons Khaemweser and Amunhirwenemef. The great emperor Ramses was renowned for his boundless ambition, discernment, and vision.

When Did Ramses II Get the Throne of Egypt?

Ramses, who was 25 years old when he ascended to the Egyptian throne in 1279 BC following the death of his father, ruled Egypt for 66 years until 1213 BC. A skillful general, he defended his empire against several foes including the Hittites, Libyans, Syrians, and Nubians. The battle of Kadesh, which took place in 1274 BC in the city of Kadesh between Ramses II and the Hittites, is one of the oldest battles in ancient Egyptian history. He led his army, which during his era numbered 100,000 men, on numerous campaigns to Nubia and the Levant in order to expand his empire and restore the glory of the Egyptian empire by gaining control of many cities in the region. The conflict is regarded as the most thoroughly recorded conflict in all of antiquity. No one won this conflict, yet both sides declared victory, leading to the creation of the first-ever written peace agreement in human history.

What Are the Best Works of King Ramses II?

While at war with the Hittites, Ramses built a new city in the Nile River delta that he named Per Ramess to serve as his residence. Ramses is regarded as the second-longest reigning king in Egyptian history, having reigned for 67 years, behind Pepi II of the 6th dynasty, who reigned for 90 years. The Amenhotep III Temple at Luxor, which houses the hall of columns in the Karnak Temple, is just one example of the many temples he built during his reign. He also rebuilt and expanded several of his ancestor’s constructions.

He built his own temples in an effort to immortalize his legacy; the Ramesseum temple, which is the largest of these, is located on the west bank of the river and depicts his campaigns in Nubia and his great accomplishments. Unfortunately, it was devoured by time, leaving only tiny, insignificant remnants. He constructed the Abu Simbel Temples, which served as the southernmost and last frontier of the Egyptian kingdom. It contains two temples, the larger of which is dedicated to him and decorated with his military victories and accomplishments, and the smaller temple is dedicated to his wife Nefertari. Every temple had its name on it, and throughout his reign, enormous statues and monuments were built.
