El Nabatat Island, also known as Kitchener’s Island, is a little oval-shaped island located in the middle of the Nile River in Aswan, behind the island of Elephantine. The island, which is less than a kilometer long and a kilometer wide, is well known for housing Aswan’s enchanted Botanical Garden, which is home to some of the most unusual flora in the world. It is arranged into 27 squares like a chessboard and has 3 entrances. Due to its lush, natural surroundings, it is a great place for picnics and leisure for both locals and visitors.
Kitchener’s Island’s History
Having served as the Consul-General Lord Kitchener’s headquarters for his military triumphs and wars in Sudan, Kitchener’s Island first became known as Kitchener Island in 1899. He received the island as a gift, where he worked to indulge his interest in botany. From 29 September 1911 to 6 June 1914, he imported seeds and shrubs from far-off nations like India and Malaysia to turn the 750m (2,460ft) long island into a paradise habitat for rare, subtropical, and exotic plants.
In 1928, the ministry of irrigation began to broaden its work by including trees and plants from all five continents. The Garden utilized a Botanical Research Institute and was integrated into the Egyptian government. The best Pharaoh’s attractions are found in Aswan, the glitziest region in all of Egypt.
