The Unification Battle of Egypt
[ez-toc]
Overview of King Menes and the Unification Battle
The unification struggle signaled the start of the early dynastic period, which resulted in the establishment of the first royal dynasty by Egypt’s first pharaoh, “king Narmer,” also known as “Menes,” whose name means “He Who Endures,” in about 3100 BCE. He is credited with bringing lower and Upper Egypt together into one cohesive nation during a protracted conflict that spanned all of Egypt. The 1988 discovery of the “Narmer” palette provided a wealth of knowledge about him, his time period, and gods like Hathor and Horus. The Ankh and the Djed pillar were the most popular religious symbols, and he established his own religion in order to unite Egypt. Memphis became Egypt’s first unified city. By expanding trade with other nations across North Africa and the surrounding areas, constructing massive projects, laying the groundwork for future kingdoms, and increasing Egypt’s military presence, he improved the economy and put Egypt on the right track to becoming the most powerful military and economic force in ancient history.
