Kalabsha Temple

[ez-toc]

The first stop on any Nile River Cruise on Nasser Lake is the magnificent Kalabsha temple, which is situated in Aswan and is visible from the High Dam. When you get there, you’ll stroll down the temple’s first pylon-leading stone causeway along its entrancing causeway. After there, you will pass a colonnaded court with eight hypostyle halls with columns. The amazing hieroglyphs and reliefs on its walls reveal a lot about the ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses as well as the Greek pharaohs.

The Reasons for Building Kalabsha Temple

The Kalabsha temple was started towards the end of the Ptolemaic era and finished under the rule of Augustus, the Roman emperor. The Nubian god Mandulis was the major focus of the temple. The Kalapsha temple was moved from its original location some 30 miles to the south during the construction of the High Dam. The imagery seen in the temple of Kalabsha is a rare fusion of ancient Egyptian and Greek motifs, mythology, and religion. A substantial wall separates the compound from the temple’s massive Pylon. By climbing the stairs to the upper portion of the temple, you can also take in a breathtaking view of the lake and the tall dam from the roof.

The Process of Moving the Kalabsha Temple

The Kalapsha Temple was fortunately moved and saved together with other monuments with the help of UNESCO in the 1960s, and that effort was mostly carried out by the German Republic. The Kalapsha Temple was nearly destroyed by the overflowing waters of Lake Nasser. When visiting the Aswan High Dam, you may now use a pair of binoculars to explore the temple of Kalabsha, which was once 56 kilometers from Aswan. A granite doorway was found by the laborers as they were moving the temple, and they presented it to the Berlin Agyptisches Museum.

A hypostyle hall, an open court, some outstanding Ptolemaic columns, and some screen walls are just a few of the amazing sights you may see. The interior decorations disclose a wealth of information about the ceremonial settings, including details about famous Southern Egyptian deities like Khnum and Min.
