Aswan

Aswan, a city on the Nile River, has been southern Egypt’s strategic and commercial gateway since antiquity. It contains significant archaeological sites like the Philae temple complex, on Agilkia Island near the landmark Aswan Dam. Philae’s ruins include the columned Temple of Isis, dating to the 4th century B.C. Downriver, Elephantine Island holds the Temple of Khnum, from the Third Dynasty.

Aswan tours: Philae, the High Dam and Abu Simbel

Aswan is Egypt's southern city on the First Cataract of the Nile, where granite islands break the river and Nubian villages line the West Bank. The main sights are the Temple of Isis at Philae, moved to Agilkia Island when the High Dam was built, the Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarries, the High Dam itself and Lake Nasser behind it. A felucca sail around Elephantine and Kitchener's Island is part of almost every visit.

Aswan is also the base for Abu Simbel, about 280 km south, reached by road or a short flight, and the start or end point of Nile cruises to Luxor. Winter days are warm and dry; in summer, plan sightseeing for early morning.
