Luxor

Luxor is a city on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt. It’s on the site of ancient Thebes, the pharaohs’ capital at the height of their power, during the 16th–11th centuries B.C. Today’s city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north. The royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens are on the river’s west bank.

Luxor tours: Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Nile

Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt in the New Kingdom, and holds more major monuments than anywhere else in the country. The East Bank has Karnak, the largest temple complex of the ancient world, and Luxor Temple, joined by the restored Avenue of Sphinxes. The West Bank, the city of the dead, has the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu and the Colossi of Memnon.

Two full days is the minimum to see both banks; three lets you add a sunrise hot air balloon flight, Dendera and Abydos to the north, or Edfu to the south. Luxor is also where most Nile cruises start or finish. Dr Mo Tours is based in Luxor, so every tour below is run by our own Egyptologists.
