Abu Simbel

In the town of Abu Simbel, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, close to the Sudanese border, is the historic monument known as Abu Simbel, which consists of two enormous rock-cut temples. About 230 kilometers southwest of Aswan, it is located on the western shore of Lake Nasser.
The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Nubian Monuments” which include Amada, Wadi es-Sebua, and other Nubian sites, and which extend from Abu Simbel downstream to Philae (close to Aswan).

Abu Simbel tours from Aswan and beyond

The two rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel were carved for Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari in the 13th century BC. In the 1960s UNESCO moved them, block by block, to higher ground to save them from Lake Nasser. The Great Temple's façade has four seated colossi of Ramesses about 20 metres high; inside, twice a year around 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun reaches the sanctuary and lights three of its four statues.

Abu Simbel is about 280 km south of Aswan. Most visitors go on a long day trip by road from Aswan, leaving before dawn, or take a short flight; an overnight stay allows sunrise without crowds and the evening sound and light show.
