Abu Simbel Sun Festival 2026 (22 October)

Abu Simbel Sun Festival in brief: twice a year, on 22 October and 22 February, the rising sun shines about 60 metres through the Great Temple of Abu Simbel and lights up three of the four statues in the inner sanctuary: Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra and the deified Ramses II. Ptah, a god linked with the underworld, stays in shadow. The light lasts around 20 minutes just after sunrise. The next date is Thursday 22 October 2026.

What Happens During the Sun Festival

Ramses II built the Great Temple about 3,200 years ago and aligned its axis so the dawn sun would reach the sanctuary on two days of the year. Many Egyptologists link the dates to the king’s coronation and birthday, or to the farming seasons. Visitors queue in the dark from around 4am, the gates open before sunrise, and the crowd moves through the hypostyle hall as the beam travels inward. Outside, Nubian music and dance groups perform through the morning.

The temple was cut into a sandstone cliff, then moved 65 metres higher between 1964 and 1968 in a UNESCO rescue before Lake Nasser flooded the site. The alignment survived the move; the event now falls one day later than in antiquity.

How to Get to Abu Simbel

  • From Aswan by road: about 280 km, 3 to 3.5 hours. On festival day private cars leave Aswan around 1am to arrive before dawn.
  • From Aswan by air: a short flight of roughly 45 minutes, though festival-day seats sell out early.
  • From Luxor: travel to Aswan the day before by car, train or Nile cruise, then join the night drive.
  • Stay in Abu Simbel: a night in the village lets you walk to the temple and avoid the 1am start.

Tips for the Sun Festival

  • Bring a warm layer: desert mornings in October are cool before sunrise.
  • Expect crowds and a slow-moving queue inside the temple; keep your ticket and passport handy.
  • Photography is allowed but the sanctuary is dark and packed; the best photos are of the façade at sunrise.
  • Visit the smaller Temple of Nefertari next door once the crowd thins.
