Cairo

Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts. Nearby, Giza is the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century BC. In Gezira Island’s leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views.

Cairo tours: Pyramids, museums and historic Cairo

Cairo is the starting point of most trips to Egypt. Within the greater city you have the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, the older pyramids of Saqqara and Dahshur, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir with its royal treasures, and the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza. Historic Cairo adds the Citadel of Salah El-Din and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Coptic Cairo with the Hanging Church, Islamic Cairo's medieval streets and the Khan El-Khalili bazaar.
