One of the first Middle Eastern archaeological museums was constructed, the Egyptian Museum, by Khedive Abbas Helmy II in the center of Cairo in 1901. The Museum’s two floors are filled with fascinating objects from the Predynastic to the Graeco-Roman periods (5500 BC to 364 AD).

It holds a magical collection of artifacts that honors the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under a single pharaoh, including the whole burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I, the riches of Tanis, and the renowned Narmer Palette. The great monarchs who constructed the huge pyramids at the Giza plateau, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, are represented by mythical statues at the museum. Along with other noteworthy items, the Museum has a sizable collection of sarcophagi, papyri, and jewelry that serve to illustrate the magnificent history and culture of ancient Egypt.
